MARTZ ON THE MIKE: AUGUST 19
Monday, August 19, 2002 Text Size Text Size ON PRACTICES BEFORE PRESEASON GAMES: 'We basically only spend one and a half practices on any preseason game we play. Preseason games are evaluation periods. We will expose our starters for a brief period of time, whatever we decide, and then try to take a look at as many guys as we can.' OH HIS FEELINGS ABOUT THE PRESEASON: 'I hate the preseason. Not that I hate the preseason games, but I just want to start playing. I think we should practice two weeks and then open up. That is kind of how I feel. You have got to have the preseason and it is good to look at all of these players and give them an opportunity to make your squad and prove whether or not they can make it. You get antsy, we have a pretty good team here and we are anxious to play.' ON T JOHN ST. CLAIR: 'Any time you can get game snaps and you haven’t played before it is going to help you. John will play the whole game of every preseason game left at this point.' MORE ON PRESEASON GAMES: 'Everybody is overly cautious with their starters. If you are trying to build a team and you don’t know what you have you want four games. I think we have a pretty good feel for what we have and you just become a little neurotic about trying to protect your guys. But, I understand the necessity for the four, I would prefer that it were shorter, but that is not really my call.'
